The Friendship Ended

The friendship ended…

When you had to fight for their attention

When you had to go out of your way

To get them to respond to what you had to say

When they spoke half truths with blurry lines

You can’t make them want to be your friend

But they don’t get to be upset when it comes to an end.

The friendship ended…

When you wanted the best for them even when you were hurt

When you did all that you could to be there for them and make it work

When you became a chore to them instead of a companion

Those moments of silence suddenly feel like empty canyons

When they once felt like moments of understanding

But you can’t change a mind that is already set.

The friendship ended…

When they started blocking you out

When they started letting their guard down

When you pushed them to be healthier and to change

And when they started having more and more good days

When they became afraid of the support that you gave

When they realized that getting stronger means things will never be the same

Someday they will be better but it will probably be long after you’ve left.

The friendship ended…

When they started faking their compliments constantly

When they started pretending to be interested in your life story

When they thought they could lie straight through their teeth

About the decisions they made and their reasoning

When they chose to make the same mistakes

When they chose to suffer the same old heartbreaks

When they listened to others who sought to bring them down

When they gave permission for someone else’s hatred to be so loud

They forgave the sinners acting like saints

But you know that you can’t sit back and wait

For them to come back to terms again

And realize all those nightmares won’t come to an end

When they closed the door and left you down and out

There’s nothing nothing more you can do now.

The friendship ended…

And it’s time to say goodbye

If they find someone better

Then give them this last bit of advice:

“Hold them closer than you held me –

Don’t you dare ever push them aside.”
