MHA Poem 29: Behavior

BEHAVIOR

Behavior is shaped and maintained by its consequences. -B.F. Skinner

A cringe is a curl away from a pain that we cannot see.

A flickering smile on the face of a broken man is a promise we cannot keep.

The glint in the eye of a stranger walking by is the answer to a question we don’t know.

The stutter of a child who can’t speak up is blocking us out from a place they can’t go.

Walking, talking, sitting, singing, climbing, whining, running, humming,

Dancing, glancing, sleeping, reading; all distractions because we each need something.

Behind every face is a story the we can’t tell in it’s entirety.

Behind every behavior is a reason that we’ll never understand entirely.
