MHA Poem 26: Sociopath

SOCIOPATH

A sociopath will do anything to win. Anything. -Denzel Washington

John Doe walked the streets with his chin up, his smile on, and his eyes bright, even though he would go home every night, with the understanding that he just might because the scariest thing anyone he knew could be close to.

John Doe joined his friends at parties and at events, dressed for the occasion, as normal as everyone else, only just a bit more competitive than everyone else, and while it was annoying, it was just the pattern of behavior they came to know in him.

John Doe had his quirks and pitfalls as a person, not unlike every other person in this room, but he was extraordinarily talented in many regards – such as his ability to persuade with ease, manipulate everything to his benefit, and gain something in every scenario with which he was faced – but everyone noted this as his best trait: hard work.

John Doe didn’t ever let anyone in on the secret that his business savvy comes from an unhealthy place for which he must seek constant therapy, which he is afraid to admit even to himself is a permanent necessity of his life forever forth, but if it keeps his secret safe, then he will keep up the life he’s built exactly as he has built it.

John Doe long ago decided that his diagnosis was not one for everyone to know, and a damning detail that would tarnish the image he’s created, the ideal of success he fought others and himself to attain, and he would rather everyone known his name than his diagnosis – John the Businessman and John the Sociopath just don’t sit the same.
