Being told you are “almost good” is not a compliment,
But neither is it an insult;
Being “almost good” is merely the motivational speech given
To those of us who are hidden from even our selves –
Being “almost good” is better than being hopeless or naturally skilled
Because being “almost good” means we have to be strong-willed;
Don’t mind me, though – I’ll wear my “almost good” with pride while
Everyone forgets to consider me a threat
And I’ll just be “almost good” to the competitive passersby
I don’t mind being “almost good” until the trophy is mine.
.: A Word from the Author :.
I wrote this poem just in time for the highly competitive part of the spring season. Sports are coming to an end as they enter statewide tournaments and strive to be ranked as the best team wherever they are located. Talent shows, variety shows, and other end-of-the-year competitions are going, too, and there are going to be a lot of 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, and so on placements where people feel only “almost good” enough. I wanted to make it perfectly clear that being “almost good” is not a bad thing and that you should embrace where you are as an opportunity to grow when others are focused on their winnings or their shortcomings. You have the opportunity to be better without the pressure that others might be carrying on their shoulders.
Wear your “almost good” with confidence because you won’t be “almost good” forever.
