This poetry initiative doesn’t have a strict set of rules to follow as this is a poetry project designed to raise awareness and normalize mental illness. However, here’s the general idea of the prompt list layout.
WEEKS.
Last year I did daily prompts, and while that was really awesome and effective, I felt like it would be nice to change it up this year and present a list of weekly prompts. Each week has prompts and you’re perfectly welcome to use them in any order you please. I’m planning to post them in the order they appear, but that’s just because that’s my preference.
If you don’t feel inspired for any of the prompts in Week 1 during Week 1 – then choose a different prompt. I am not the poetry police and I’m not here to make you do something that doesn’t make you happy. As long as you write even just one poem, you’re helping raise awareness. You do what makes you happy while helping rip apart the stigma surrounding mental and emotional health.
PROMPTS.
These are just prompts. You don’t have to use the prompt in the poem. You don’t have to title the poem with the prompt word. The prompt is meant to be inspiration. It should reflect the prompt word in some fashion, and if that doesn’t require you saying the word in the poem – then so be it! I just ask that you tag the prompt when you post/share the poem with others.
TAGS.
Always tag the prompt you are using. I also ask that you also use one (if not all) of the following prompts:
Mental Health Awareness
Mental Health Awareness Month
MHA Poetry Initiative
mental illness
CREDIT.
I care less about receiving credit for this initiative than I do about making sure that we’re making some noise about what it’s like to live with mental illness and emotional stress on a daily basis. I’m not trying to make money off of this project. I would appreciate it if you could link back to this post (or my original one) so that others can see the prompt list for their own use to write poetry as well.
Honest is virtue, as many good character qualities are, and I think you’ll find that honesty also makes for very good and raw poetry as well.
Best of luck with this poetry initiative, and I’m so thankful for anyone who chooses to participate! It will mean the world so many people who need to know that they’re not alone.
It’s okay not to be okay.
