3 Days Until Dinner

3 Days Until Dinner

A Dinners with Caroline Countdown

Keeping it short and sweet with the plugs today. My Facebook Page is here. My Patreon page is here. I will post any time-sensitive updates to my Facebook page, such as unexpected delays or changes in the schedule if the need ever arises. I would chat with readers and share fun little things about the work process. My Patreon page is a nice way to help fund this project and ensure that I have what I need to keep making this a fun experience for you.

And now – onto the hype!

Q) Why did you choose college-age characters? Doesn’t it feel like it is somewhere between Y.A. and Adult Fiction?

Answer:

I had considered that and spoke about it to some length with a close friend of mine. Teenagers aren’t unfamiliar to me in a fiction format. Much of my fanficiton has been about teenagers and their coming-of-age experiences. I’ve written teenage romance off and off throughout the last decade. Choosing to work with older characters is not for a lack of interest of capability.

However, I didn’t want to do established adults either. I could write that just as well, drawing from my own life experiences and those of my family members. My husband and I are as domestic as it comes to adulting and parenting. It wouldn’t be difficult, and it wouldn’t be unfamiliar writing territory either.

All of that said, the main reason I chose college-age characters because these will be characters that have already had their coming-of-age realization. They are aware that they are adults and that they have responsibilities. I didn’t want too much happening with the characters’ lives, not more than I’m already incorporating. There’s also the high relatability of college-age characters.

Many adults aren’t fully established financially until they’re in their thirties, and teenagers yearn for the days when they’re in college with their newfound freedom and adult status. It feels the most relatable to the two major audience groups – the teenagers yearning to grow up faster and for the adults that are all-too-familiar with the same experience.

In the end, it just seemed right. I want to reach as many people as possible with this story and putting these characters somewhere between Y.A. and Adult Fiction. Maybe that makes it a harder sell, but maybe not. We’ll have to see!
